Chocolate is one of the most universal pleasures, and while we all love it, not all chocolates are created equal. Depending on the percentage of cocoa, we can find several types of chocolate that offer different taste experiences.
-
Dark chocolate
This is the favorite of pure cocoa lovers. It generally has a cocoa percentage ranging from 50% to 100%. The higher this percentage, the more bitter the taste and the less sugar it has. A 70% cocoa chocolate, for example, already has an intense flavor, while 90% or higher chocolates are for true aficionados who enjoy the intensity.
-
Milk chocolate
This is the most popular in many parts of the world. It has between 30% and 50% cocoa, and its flavor is milder thanks to the milk and higher sugar content. It is perfect for those looking for a sweet and creamy experience.
-
White chocolate
Technically, it is not “real” chocolate because it does not contain cocoa solids. It is made mainly from cocoa butter, sugar and milk, which gives it that light colour and a very sweet and smooth flavour.
When buying chocolate in Spain, milk chocolate is the most consumed, following a global trend. Its smoothness and sweetness make it the favourite, especially among children and teenagers. Dark chocolate, although it is gaining followers, especially among those looking for healthier or lower sugar options, is still in second place in terms of popularity. White chocolate, although it has its public, is the least consumed of the three.
As for its formats, the usual form is the chocolate bar, although chocolates are a pleasure that very few can resist.
On a global level, Spain is not one of the countries that leads the consumption of chocolate, although its love for hot chocolate and chocolate bars is notable. Spaniards consume around 3.5 kg of chocolate per person per year, a figure that may seem high, but which is far from large consumers such as Switzerland, where more than 10 kg are eaten per person per year. Other countries such as Germany, Austria and Belgium also surpass Spain in terms of the amount of chocolate consumed.
